Fracture Mechanics is a methodology used to predict and diagnose failure of a component with an existing crack or flaw. Typically, it is used to establish stress intensity factors, rate of crack growth per load cycle, crack path prediction and load redistribution during advancement of a crack, and to establish the critical crack size at the point of rupture.

Fracture mechanics can be vitally important when making critical engineering decisions on assets that have experienced cracking.
