Project Scope:

  • EDC was engaged to conduct advanced modelling and site measurements to assess the structural integrity of the two Silo’s and their supporting structures to ensure the facility could remain in operation until their planned replacement.

Challenge:

  • FEA model development was challenging due to poor or inadequate fabrication drawings, undocumented design changes, coupled with loss of plate thickness across critical shell plates.

Success:

  • Thickness testing and site surveys were undertaken that allowed development of a representative FEA model for stress, fracture and buckling analysis simulation.
  • Analysis confirmed that the facility could continue to operate with continuous load monitoring and regular structural inspections at areas identified that would have catastrophic consequences of failure.
