Project Scope:
•Evaluate the operational consequences of gouging out a major crack in the root of the Girth Gear teeth.

• Installing strain gauges along the root of a gouged and original tooth that would allow time history measurement of stresses during mill operation.
• Develop an accurate 3-D FEA model of the girth gear to reproduce measured stress results to advise on consequences of crack gouging.

• Successfully installed strain gauges that would measure stresses during mill operation and obtained measurement data that were used for analysis and FEA model correlation.
• Through continuous and live monitoring, the client was able to continue operating the mill until a replacement Girth gear was available, 18 months later.
